This volume contains a major unpublished manuscript on relativity and electrodynamics, as well as an important research notebook documenting Einstein's work toward his first joint paper of 1913 with Marcel Grossmann. It also includes fifty pages of previously unknown calculations, by Einstein in collaboration with Michele Besso, on the motion of the perihelion of Mercury.

After un unsuccesful attempt to auction the manuscript on relativity and electrodynamics (Doc. 1) on 16 March 1996, it was bought by the Jacob E. Safra Philantropic Foundation, which has donated it to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. It is very satisfactory that this important document is no longer in private hands.

The Einstein-Besso manuscript on the perihelion motion of Mercury (Doc. 14) was auctioned for $360,000 by Christie's on 25 November 1996. The new owner wishes to remain anonymous.

A more detailed description of this volume can be found in its Introduction.
